Product Description

A new flagship. A new class of receiver

Introducing the new flagship receiver of the Elite line: the SC-57. It wouldn't be an overstatement to call the new Elite SC-57 one of the most revolutionary receivers ever produced. Or that the industry has ever seen.

Until now digital amplification - categorized as Class-D devices - have received little or no respect from a cautious and hesitant industry. Unable to conquer the challenges of "digital", A/V receiver manufacturers have sought refuge in the comfort zone of analog Class-A/B amplifiers. One problem with that is analog amplifiers have had essentially the same design for the last fifty years, leaving little room for further performance enhancements. Another is the multi-channel soundtracks now available on Blu-ray Disc simply cannot be maximized or enjoyed to their full potential through conventional analog A/B amplification.

Pioneer understood early the massive power output potential of Class-D amplification, and made the bold decision to produce multi-channel amplifiers that more than rise to the occasion of bringing the new audio dimension that Blu-ray Disc provides to the home theater enthusiast.

The Elite SC-57 is the third generation of Class-D amplifiers for Pioneer, and as such we've designated it in a class all its own: Class D3

5Great sound at a great price
By Busy Executive
Okay, I admit it - I'm a recovering audioholic...my primary system has tens of thousands of dollars worth of the best components money can buy, and I get tons of enjoyment from it. I bought the SC-57 to drive a secondary system in my vacation home, and I admit I was nervous to think that I'd be taking quite a step down in sound quality. After a few months of setup and serious listening, I can say that I'm getting more from the SC-57 than I had ever hoped. The home theater speakers in my second home are a 7.2 Martin-Logan hybrid electrostatic speaker system...the front L/R pair is an older "Quest" pair (some of my personal favorite speakers), and the other channels are a bit more modern wall mounted units. I mention this because the ML's are notorious for being difficult to drive, requiring gobs of power to get serious sound. The 9 channel SC-57 gave me the option to bi-amp the mains, while using the remaining channels for the other speakers. By my measurements, I'm getting about 237 watts to the front stereo pair, and about 115 watts to the rest. My subwoofers are a matched ML pair, internally amplified. To me, the ML Quests are extremely revealing of any flaws in your electronics. With high-end gear, you get a limitless, 3D sound that sorts of just floats in the air around you. With lesser equipment, you tend to sense a "blurry" sound that somehow moves around and breaks down. The Pioneer passes this test, and although it's not the equal of the McIntosh 1200 watt monoblocks in my primary system, it is quite good overall - especially when you consider that 9 channels of those McIntosh amps would cost enough to pay for an SC-57 for everyone in your neighborhood. Indeed, the main difference I notice is that I tend to play the SC-57 somewhat more quietly, since it tends to sound rather raspy and shrill as it approaches clipping.Overall, I'd give the SC-57 an 8.5-9.0 out of 10 in terms of overall sound quality, and I imagine you'd need to spend at least triple to get anything substantially better. As for construction quality, it's a fairly beefy unit that seems like it should last quite a while. Again, it's not one of those hundred pound monster amps, but there's definitely some substance and all the parts and finish seem high quality.Setup - except for the bi-amp part - was fairly straightforward, and you can get reasonably listenable settings in under an hour from first plugging in the unit. As I've become more and more accustomed to it, I've been able to fine tune it to my preferences, considerably improving the sound quality over time. All of the components I connected to it - my HD video box, a 3D plasma TV, a JVC 3D Projector, an Oppo transport, various computers - all interfaced fine...zero issues to report here. The remote is reasonable, but I admit I haven't used it much as I have a more ambitious iPad system I prefer.Although I tend to be a bit of a purist, I must say I like some of the newer convenience features, such as 3D video and support for Apple AirPlay. It's amazing to unlock my music library using this thing, and I could get very spoiled having nearly anything ever recorded right at my fingertips.Overall, I think Pioneer has a winner here. They've made something that gives you 90% the sound quality of the world's best, for 90% less cost - and in the mix, they've even managed to raise the bar on features and capabilities.Definitely worth an audition!UPDATE:After reading some negative reviews about the SC-57's ability to meet its claimed power output, I did some fairly extensive testing and found that at least in my setup, the SC-57 is highly sensitive to line voltage, load and noise. In my area we tend to have sloppy power...I was getting anywhere from 108 to 123 volts, and this seemed to play havoc with the SC-57. As a result, at least in my environment, I'm getting much more reliable performance with the SC-57 on an outlet that's not heavily loaded with other equipment, and I've also taken the precaution of installing a good power conditioner (Panamax, Monster, APC are all good and not too expensive - just make sure yours can handle the peak 1500 watts or so that the SC-57 can consume). Both of these precautions seem to help the SC-57 greatly.

5Who cares about features on PAPER - This is a performance powerhouse!

There are a few people that are skeptical about the new SC-55/SC-57 because they are no longer using the B&O ICE amp. Well, I can tell you, that's a GOOD THING. These amps are the best sounding Pioneer to day. Compared to an SC-37 there is a noticeable difference. They are just "cleaner" is the word I've been using. Neutral like all Pio's, but it's not flat like my SC-37 was. Plenty of power too. I just added the front height speakers and it works! It adds to the viewing experience. The addition of NeoX is welcome for sure! MCACC is great, Aud XT32 is better from what I understand, but I have zero complaints. AirPlay is awesome. I love this AVR, and I bought it for the same price I just sold the 37 for. Couldn't be happier.Curious if EITHER of the other reviewers actually own one.The only downside, is it's still only a 1 year warranty even through BB or one of the other authorized dealers. Lowest price on Amazon right now is $1,300 and I can say without hesitation that this is THE BEST AVR at that price point. There was also an issue with the firmware update, but I have yet to try. It just wouldn't load for a lot of people.DEFINITELY A SOLID BUY AT $1,500 or less.
