5Excellent little receiver
By STEVE
I bought this receiver specifically for the HD radio feature and I am pleased with my purchase.I live in the Philadelphia area and I like classical music. Unfortunately, there are no "normal" stations that broadcast classical in the evening. But when I bought this receiver, I was able to receive 3 stations in the area that broadcast classical music on HD2. It's a special treat to listen to my music when I come home. Before going on, I think it is fair to caution you that before purchasing this receiver, it would be wise to research HD and see which stations broadcast in HD2, HD3 or even HD4 in your area. There may not be too many since this is a relatively new technology. Many stations throughout the country are adding additional channels every month. The ones labeled HD2 to HD4 can only be picked up with an HD receiver. Please do your homework before investing in this or any other HD receiver. When you tune into any HD2 to HD4 station, you will probably hear your station come in, then drop out for anywhere between 3 to 30 seconds. Don't get upset. This is usually the case. Virtually all HD stations do not broadcast on a high power output due to FCC regulations at this time. The drop out is the Sherwood receiver capturing the weak station, then compensating for it. Be patient. If the station isn't too far away, you will receive it. Also, there are times when a station is temporarily lost and reverts to the primary analog channel. For example, I was listening to WPEN-FM HD2 this morning. Suddenly, the audio dropped out for about 10 seconds, then I heard sports talk, which is the station's analog broadcast. This is a rare occurrence but it can happen. When the signal strength of your station is too weak for one reason or another, this happens. Maybe someone was at the tower site making an adjustment. When the signal temporarily drops out, all HD radios are programmed to return to their regular analog channel. In this case, it went from WPEN HD2 classical (680 watts output) to WPEN analog sports talk (15 kWatts output). I tried and succeeded in returning to my HD2 channel within 2 minutes. I had no more signal strength issues for the rest of the day.Be sure to install a dipole antenna. I went out and bought a cheap $3 one from the radio store. Then I taped it to the wall and made certain that the ends were as far apart from each other as possible. The antenna that comes with the set is not a dipole and will not work as well for you as this one.Once again, do your homework. Check to see what stations are in your area and enjoy your purchase.

3No HDMI audio
By C. Adkinson
This receiver has 2 HDMI inputs which led me to believe that I could connect it with an HDMI cable and have wonderful sound. I later learned that the HDMI inputs are only a switch for video and do not tune the audio. You must use the optical or coax inputs to tune the audio and miss out on the real sound. For instance, my blu ray disk offered me a choice of 7.1 surround or 2.1 surround and since I only had optical inputs I could only use 2.1 surround.I could however use the optical input and get 5.1 surround but only with the non-blu-ray disk. The choice was good sound or good picture but not both. I felt like a fool for thinking the HDMI inputs would actually let me connect with an HDMI cable.

4Capable Receiver, Complicated Remote
By StacheCache
The SHERWOOD RD-7405HDR is almost exactly what I wanted in a receiver at a very fair price. It delivers great sound via the HD Radio option--makes FM sound like a CD and AM sound almost as good as FM. You can tune into regular AM/FM signals or with other inputs, listen to music from a CD or other sources. I use an Apple Express to stream my iTunes library as well as internet radio into the receiver so I can listen in my office or out on the back patio. There are two surround speaker choices of 5.1 or 7.1. Plus the option of delivering stereo sound to a second room. To add the second room however, you can only have 5.1 surround in the main room. This is not a problem. The challenge is trying to read and understand the set-up instructions and figuring out how to use the remote. For example, after several hours of struggling with some hard-to-understand instruction on how to turn on Room2 speakers, I contacted Sherwood tech support. Within hours I got clear, concise instructions on resolving my issue. That said, the remote can be awkward to use for some functions because some buttons perform multiple functions. For example, if you want to turn on the 2nd room speakers, you must first "Assign" the amplifier to those speakers. It's not enough to simply wire them into the receiver. The assignment process itself seems a little cumbersome. Then if you want to adjust the volume for these speakers, you first press the "Room2" button. Then press the "Down Arrow" twice, then press "Left Arrow" to turn volume down or "Right Arrow" to turn it up. It appears the remote may have been originally designed for a simpler receiver but has been adapted through software to handle many more receiver options. The bottom line is that once you figure out and agree to live with some unusual quirks of the SHERWOOD RD-7405HDR, it delivers satisfying sound wherever you want it. And at a price that's about half of what a comparable high-end HD receiver would cost.
