5A Sweet A/V Receiver from Onkyo
By OsamaAlthanon
Note: I purchased this receiver from a local vendor due to its weight as it will cost me an arm and a leg to ship this to Saudi Arabia (350$) and I'll lose the warranty.I got this a month ago, and I tell you, it is a lovely new achievement from Onkyo. It will satisfy any gadget'ey, high-tech user who has a passion for high quality audio and video.- Menus/OSDMenus/OSD are better than older Onkyos... and yes, you can use your Apple iPad to 'remote control' it. There is a free app, but I purchased 'oRemote' which is a bit more advanced.. seamless and tech'ey... in addition to all other gadegt'ey remote control features using the iPad; you can do functions without turning ON your TV, especially for zone 2/3 via your home's network, like selecting DLNA audio tracks, internet radio and my wife's favorite: turn it off remotely so the kids can go back to their study or me stop watching a movie while lunch is being served (evil laugh here).- SoundThe sound is incredible and sound flow through the channels is superb. I had the Onkyos 875 and 876 previously as well as a Yamaha, but this one is a symphony by itself.I am using Pioneer/Bose speakers combo inherited from my old setup and they sound great. If you want, you can settle down for 7.1 speaker setup from your old receiver until you get the front-wide and front-high ones. All are automatically configured with Audyssey. My advise is not to rush those speakers and look for a good deal on them ;) continuing to use your old setup.- Neo: XDTS Neo: X is an experience by itself.. you will have to hear it working.- THXTHX Select 2 Plus is excellent for its class and it is included with the TX-NR1009 (please note that THX Ultra 2 is meant for rooms with size 3000 cubit feet and it is not included with the TX-NR1009 but also, it is not needed here).- VideoI am using it with a Samsung 3D LED 55" 7000 series on an ARC HDMI port. PS3, HD cable-sat, xbox 360, Two high-end Windows machines, and a Samsung 3D Blu-Ray player, etc (the list goes on) are all running fine with an eye-relaxing picture.- RemoteThe remote control is only half back lit. Unlike the 875. Not a major issue though.- DLNADLNA only plays AUDIO files, no photos and no videos. Look at the fine print. However, if you own a PS3, xbox 360 or one of those network media players that everyone else has, you won't have an issue.- Front PanelThe front panel shows enough info regarding the status and track/source being streamed. So, again, you won't need a TV to see what is going on when listening to audio tracks.- Summary:Video: as advertised.Audio: as advertised.Sound modes: as advertised.Remote: half back lit - not all buttons.DLNA: audio only.Network/LAN: nice - wifi optional.HDMI ports: Plenty! 8 in/2 outFront panel: informative enough.Front buttons: adequate.Mobile device remote control: Yes - I used oRemote on iPad, but others will do. Check you mobile device application store.Enjoy!

5Fantastic Unit
By Gil
I purchased the Onkyo TX-NR1009 to upgrade from an old Yamaha receiver and the sound is fabulous. I have Polk LSI speakers (15's, Center, FX and LSI 9's) and this receiver drives them extremely well. I bi-amped the main speakers and this is easy to do through the menu's. My unit did not come with a printed manual but other than that I'm very pleased with it.The sound is very clean and some of the music surround modes such as Neo:x are really excellent. I literally hear things in songs I've never heard before. I wired it with an Ethernet connection to my home network. I understand there is a wireless device you can use to hook it up but it works great wired. It does Pandora great. I also have my music library on an inexpensive home NAS Drive and it plays those songs just fine over Ethernet. I also use a turntable for vinyl and this receiver has a phono pre-amp that works great. I'm still learning what all it can do.After my initial listen, I ran Audyssey setup. It did a great job of adjusting for speaker distances and setting the low end cutoff to 40 hz for my smaller speakers (surrounds, center etc). However, the Audyssey sound curve set to music really made the whole thing sound worse - a lot worse. I turned that off for each source. I suggest that you turn this off or try it both ways and see what you like if you are going to primarily listen to music. On the minus side, the remote is kind of lame and not fully back lit so I keep a small flashlight handy to illuminate it. However, the iPhone remote app works OK. It makes you select the device each time but other than that works fine and it is very cool to fire up Pandora from another room. If you are not going to either do 9.1 or bi-amp your mains and run 7.1 (or set up other zones) then the TX-NR809 would be the better choice for the money. Since I bi-amped the main speakers I did have a use for all nine amplifiers so that is why I chose this unit.

5Upgraded from a TX-SR805
By Sean
I upgraded from a TX-SR805 just so I could pass 3d signals over the hdmi inputs/outputs. I used my old receiver as my zone 2 amplifier connected via rca out on the TX-NR1009.*BE ADVISED* if you want to power zone 2 speakers through this receiver you will end up sacrificing part of your 9.2 surround setup to power those zone 2 speakers. It is best to run a second receiver to power zone 2 speakers such as I did. Figured this was something worth mentioning since I did not realize it when I made the purchase. This is a massive upgrade from the TX-SR805. The thing I notice most is the highly accurate reproduction of sound on every different available sound field. Much clearer and more concise than the TX-SR805. To top it off EVERYTHING on this receiver is highly configurable almost to the point it is overkill. The +GAMMA feature in video settings is a huge plus in my book. 3D video pass through via hdmi is no problem and the receiver handles the signals with ease if you are using a HIGH SPEED verified 1.4a hdmi quality cable. Do not bother with the older 1.3 version hdmi cables as I had issues with one from the PS3 through the receiver. I would get intermittent video and sound.I am using this setup with a Mitsu 92840 3D HDTV, Sony PS3, Samsung BDP7000, Sony BDN460, and XPAND 3D glasses. Everything is working flawlessly.I highly recommend this receiver to those of you wanting absolute perfection at a reasonable price.
