5Marantz NR1601 Slimline AV Receiver - Outstanding 5.1 (up to 7.1) Sound Quality! Perfect for Den/ Bedroom!
By Somebody, Somewhere
Okay, I'm going to be totally subjective. This 4" Tall Marantz AV Receiver is the perfect Solution for use in my Den/ Bedroom (see pics above). It doesn't have every single feature of a $1500+ Receiver but still, for $500 bucks it has everything you need at the size you want (3D resolution, up to DTS-Master Audio, 4 HDMI inputs, etc.). I actually waited close to a year after the NR1501 was released for it's replacement and am glad I did.Right off the bat - this is a standalone solution meaning NO Pre-Outs! You cannot connect it to another Amplifier... it's simply not built for that purpose, especially at its price point. Also there is no 2nd Zone output and No internet connection. I'm okay with that because this is for viewing TV and using my PC in the privacy of my own room. It also means that there are less things that can go wrong! The focus of this receiver is clearly on its Audio capabilities and it's 7x50 Watt amplificatiion is plenty powerful and sounds stellar! The audio is super clean, and is nothing short of luxurious. I can obtain internet services through a separate device connected to one of its HDMI inputs so it's all good. (Look for the upcoming Amimon HD WHDI stick - fingers crossed! : )Instead of rehashing the Specs, I'll try and list some Useful Info:- If you're using HDMI Out to TV and you call up the OSD Menu (On Screen Display - visibile on your TV) to change some settings, the screen reverts to a Black Backround and settings appear in a text based format. However it is quick and you can still hear the sound.- If you're using Component or Composite Out to TV, OSD overlays right over the Video source and is Text based. Nothing fancy and straight to the point! I like that.- If you TOShttp://amzn.com/dp/B003R7KMQU/?tag={komisigede-20} Audio only from an HDTV to the receiver or are just using the FM Tuner, you can connect a single composite video cable from the receiver to the TV and use the input source you connected it to on the TV to call up the receiver's OSD Menu on ScreenOR:- You can just cycle through your options without OSD using only the receiver's LCD panel- You can completely shut off the LCD panel lights on the receiver while it's in use, very cool!- there's a Sleep Timer- Going through the Manual is a Must!- Remote has backlight, is learning capable and has a separate on/ off/ input toggle to control most TV's, thus eliminating an extra remote (Codes provided at the back of the Manual)- 6 position Audyssey MultiEQ settings can be stored. Play around with your speaker settings then default back to Audyssey if you don't like any adjustments you make (You first have to perform the Audyssey calibration to get access to and store the settings)- Tone/ Bass Control is an option if you turn off the Dynamic EQ, I prefer Dynamic EQ on though- Receiver can handle 2.0 to 7.1 speaker configurations- you can also connect a 9.1 speaker configuration and then choose between 5.1 + 2.0 Front heights or 5.1 + 2.0 surround back channels according to your preference- HDMI Control - turns on/ off other HDMI CEC compliant devices when you turn the Receiver on/ off (uses more standby power though)- All channel levels can be adjusted on the fly without resorting to OSD black screen if using HDMI, You just press then on remote and cycle through them on the LCD display of the receiverThings I *wished* it had:- Internet Radio- Video Processing/ UpscalingDon't confuse Processing/ Upscaling with the NR1601's Upconversion feature! Processing/ UpScaling adds to the cost! UpConversion just means that you can connect all kinds of Analog Video Sources (from 480i - to 1080i) and they can be output to your HDTV "As Is" through a single HDMI cable instead of changing the source inputs all of the time on your TV that has separate connections (i.e. VCR, Cable Box, Wii, etc.). Nevertheless, it's a very convenient feature to have for Non-HDMI equipment.Processing/ Upscaling takes it a step further by not only Upscaling it to 1080p but then "refines" that upscaled signal. However, this process can never take a regular DVD or Standard Definiton signal and convert it to Native Resolution Full HD anyway and is generally used to produce a cleaner look on HDTV's that are greater than 50" inches. A 1080p HDTV will scale a signal to 1080p but probably won't "refine" it like a good processor would such as Anchor Bay or Qdeo. I use a 37" LCD so this feature isn't a necessity. Also a full BluRay signal does not need any processing and you can get a good BluRay player that processes standard DVD's using Anchor Bay or Qdeo technology such as the Oppo BDP-83 (and the upcoming BDP-93).I love Internet Radio and not having to hook up the computer in order to get it. But I plan on getting it either in the BluRay player I need to purchase to go with this receiver or as a separate streamer connected to the NR1601 such as the Xtreamer. All in all, it's a Great receiver & Hope this was useful.

5Simplicity!
By D. Pulsfort
Marantz NR1601.....This unit replaces my 4/5 year old, non-HDMI Denon 2106 A/V receiver.I bought it through ONECALL.com, which is an Amazon Marketplace buying option. This unit is my main HT receiver.I like simple setups.I am an audiophile on a budget.I don't want a receiver that comes with stuff (ethernet, wifi, millions of rca pre-outs, millions of other useless connections) that I will NEVER use.I have a set of high quality 7.1 speakers that are setup correctly in a medium-sized living room. Which means that the angles and heights of the speakers are positioned correctly relative to the main listening position.I think the setup of the speaker's soundstage is more important than whether you own JBl speakers or KEF or any other brand. Anything but HTIB.This is my system:PS3 Fat(the one that plays SACD)to Marantz via HDMI. UPDATE: My PS3 fat suffered ylod, and I now use the new slim PS3. (3-10-11)Marantz to Panasonic Plasma HDTV via HDMI.Comcast High-Speed Internet to PS3 via Wifi Router.THAT IS IT!!! I do not have anything else hooked up to the MarantzI do not use any RCA inputs.I do not use any optical inputs.Only HDMI.NOTE: The PS3's audio, when watching Blu Ray movies, is set to PCM (not bitstream) in order to listen to high-res audio tracks like TrueHD and Master Audio. The Marantz recognizes this as Multi-In + DD EX or Multi-In 7.1 depending on the encoding.UPDATE: I now use the newer PS3 slim which bitstreams TrueHD and DTS-MA.This is what I like to do:PS3 streaming Netflix. I Don't like the quality, but I like the convenience.PS3 streaming Music (Apple Lossless Format of my CD collection) from another Computer. I like the Audio Quality and the convenience.PS3 plays bluray disc and DVD disc. Bluray is outsanding!PS3 plays SACD disc. Audio Quality is Great! Love the multichannel sound. UPDATE: I lost SACD functionality with PS3 slim model. darn!PS3 plays video games.PS3 plays video games online. (Oh what fun!)Some thoughts:The Marantz NR1601 is the perfect solution for people who want excellent sound quality in a small, clean, uncluttered package.Don't let the small size stop you from considering it as your main HT solution. On my old Denon, the banana plugs were smashed into the back of the cabinet. This does not happen now with the compact Marantz. The 50 watt rating is enough to power my speakers with plenty to spare. The sound quality of the Marantz is way better than my Denon, but my Denon is older and not as high-end as the Marantz. The physical quality of the Marantz is outstanding: even the remote is high quality. The soundstage of the Marantz is audiophile quality when listening to two-channel stereo. Way better than my old Denon. I noticed a difference immediately. Wider sound-stage, cleaner highs, lower lows.I like the IPOD/USB interface. By the way, Apple Lossless is decoded by the Marantz; I had my suspicions. The Marantz is the same price or more expensive than comparable models that have more inputs and pre-outs and things like that. Even so, I think that you are getting a better quality product. It is a Marantz, you know?Highly Recommended!Final Thought:When paired with the jack-of-all-trades PS3 (and a nice HDTV), I think that the Marantz NR1601 is the ultimate Home Theater solution for people who want a simple, elegant setup.

4worth the wait
By Paulmeister
So finally this thing was released earlier this month. And by the gods, it does exactly what I had hoped it would do -- allow me to pair an optical input with an HDMI source. I can now run one of my computers seamlessly to my 62" DLP with full SPDIF audio! All thanks to this little guy.I haven't toyed very much with it yet, but I intend to expand this review as I do so. I only have the two front channels + center connected at the moment, but I do plan to wire up an additional 2 to 4 surround speakers plus a DefTech Pro 1000 sub and give it a thorough audio test. I'm sure the neighbors will love me when that time comes.I also will soon test the front USB port for controlling an iPod and see how well that works. One of the principal reasons that I bought this is that I've hated how most every receiver out there is HUGE in size. I always wished for something a bit more elegant. I discovered that Marantz would be releasing this slimline model purely by chance! Now it is mine at last... and it's definitely the most stealthy receiver I've ever seen! The front panel can be made to auto-off so, right now, it looks like the unit is completely powerless when it is exactly the opposite. As far as heat is concerned, though I'm hardly cranking it, the large area of top venting seems to dissipate the heat efficiently before it has a chance to build up inside the unit. This is a good thing, since the other major reason for buying it was to fit within the confines of my TV stand's built-in component shelf, which is barely 5 1/2" high. It seems to have ample breathing room, more than I originally estimated, which is really impressive!I feel like I owe Marantz a big thanks.
