Very solid receiver!

These days, it's getting harder to find stereo only receivers. I needed one for my garage and parties.I really did not want to buy a home theatre system with all the extra video ports that would never be used.This receiver rocks! Lots of power, an MP3 jack in front, optional bluetooth adapter (which I'll never use).The AM/FM reception is very good, I'm almost 30 miles from most transmitters.The dial cranks up to 70 for power. It is crisp and clear up to about 64. Then a little bit of distortionenters into the picture. That's pretty respectable. Even cranked up for hours it seems to run cool enough.Great bang for the buck and highly recommended. Take advantage of the subwoofer out and add one to your system.I paired it with two Sony SSF-5000 speakers, and the Sony SA-W3000 subwoofer. Turns out to be a good balanced system.I can even listen to it a quarter mile away in my sweet corn field!

I recently purchased the Sherwood RX-4503 2.1 receiver from Amazon. I currently own two Sherwood RX-4109 receivers and lost a third RX-4109, that was three years old, from overheating (see the bottom note). I think the RX-4503 has some very interesting features:Although it is a two channel receiver, it can simulate surround sound.It has a rear panel preamp out (single line) for a connection to a self powered sub woofer.The specs in the supplied manual show:Power Output, Stereo Mode, 8 Ohms THD 0.08% 40 Hz-20 Khz 2X100WTotal harmonic distortion, 8 ohms, 100W, 40 Hz-20 Khz 0.02%My speaker system for this receiver is a pair of Polk Monitor 30 speakers and a Polk PSW10 Sub-WooferThe Monitor 30 speakers are -3Db at 63 HzThe PSW10 50 watt sub-woofer is -3Db at 40 HzThe listening room is 12x14I like the looks of this receiver and it has an uncluttered face which reminds me of the NAD receiver.There is a push button switch on the receiver front panel that allows you to override the standby condition and fully shut down the receiver if you wish.The remote is much better than the RX-4109 remote with a better touch feel and layout of buttons.There are four RCA inputs and one RCA output (in addition to the preamp out). There is no phono input on this model.Inputs: OutputCDTape TapeAUXExternal (6 channels in to take the output from a 5.1 decoder)I found that although you can use the External input for multiple channel inputs, it also worked fine with using it as a two channel input.On the front panel there is a removable plate that will expose a front AUX input (3/8 Mini jack) and a Blue Tooth audio input.I currently use a Grace internet radio to feed internet audio via the Aux input. My Denon CD player feeds the CD input, My Sony cassette deck is hooked up to the tape in and out jacks. My Denon DP-300F turntable feeds the External input (using the DP-300F phono preamp).My favorite music is vintage vocals, for example Julie london via Pandora, and I listen at moderate levels. Under these conditions the RX-4503 performed perfectly giving me well balanced and clean sound. I do not stress my gear, so I can't tell you how blasting it would sound.I normally am not a surround sound person and prefer just two channel audio, but I did try the virtual surround sound of which there are three types.Dolby Virtual Speaker ReferenceDolby Virtual Speaker WideDolby Headphone (For use only with headphones)Pressing the VS button will activate the virtual mode and each press of the button will cycle you through the stages. To return to normal stereo you push the Stereo mode button.Listening to Julie sing, if I punch the Virtual button, there is a delay of about a second as the receiver switches modes, then the effect is as if Julie is now sitting in your lap instead of up on the stage. The effect stays between the front speakers.Push it again to "Wide" and the image expands, but there seemed to be an increase in the bass response while the midrange dropped back a bit. It seemed to me that this effect could be of use when watching a movie.My personal taste is to stick with the standard stereo sound, but you may prefer the surround effect.The RX-4503 has the same caveats as the RX-4109. Don't use speakers less than 8 ohms impedance, if using 8 ohm speakers don't use system A+B, only use A or B and finally do not enclose the receiver or block ventilation.I purchased my receiver from Amazon.com for $124.86 with free shipping. If you are interested in learning more about the RX-4503, there are a decent number of reviews online and you can download a PDF copy of the manual from a number of sources.It's an excellent buy.

I am very amazed on the sound quality. I have this hooked up to some Sony SS-B1000 Bookshelf Speakers and they are wonderful together. I have this system hooked up to my PC and TV. I use winamp to play all my music and I recommend that on the equalizer section to bring up the preamp to bring up the volume level. Love the sub out on the back I can't wait to get one for it. I will probably get the Sony SA-W2500. I was going to get a 5.1 system but this actually works well and cheaper too. Oh yah Pandora is great on this too and my PS3 games are more alive. I used to have the Logitech Z-2300 that system rocks but this is the way to go the sound is more full.
