5A Return to Form
By Robert Swanson
I'm a fan of vintage Marantz stereo equipment, their 60s/70s amps, receivers, and tuners were always well made, elegant, and had a signature warmth sound to them. This was during their Saul Marantz and Superscope days. But in the 80s and 90s they were owned under the Phillips brand, and their gear was never quite the same since; be it quality, tonality, and certainly esthetics. Now a days the company is under D&M Holdings ("D"enon and "M"arantz), and Marantz is bouncing back to it's former self; there's an emphasis being paid again to style (in this case the classic "porthole" design), simplicity (two-knob unit with a concealed interface, logos of features are on the top of the unit as to keep the front face clean-looking), and construction (the sr7005 packs a lot of sound but can fit just about anywhere).Above all, my fellow vinyl purist will be happy to hear, the Marantz SR7005 brings back the MM PHONO STAGE with a ground! For a long time this was taken out of their receivers (and not just with the Marantz brand) which was puzzling when the company's logo is: MUSIC MATTERS.Look, not to get too long winded here, so I'll just say this I'm an avid vintage audiophile, an FLAC and AIFF nut, and a HT semi-guru, and this SR7005 does the trick. No buyer's remorse here! A huge step up from the Sony DA5ES unit I was using for home theater stuff, which was just about the same price in 2002.I'm running the SR7005 with Aperion Intimus 5B Harmony HD surround speakers, mostly use it for 2 CH music and the thing is incredibly warm and above all tweak-able (direct pure analog mode, 2CH w sub, PLII/DTS Neo:6: Music, Movie, and Game mode, even a mode to compensate for lossy mp3 files which sounds pretty good). With movies, the Audessy XT set up worked beautifully and accurately. It may not, however, be the latest version from Audessy and "only" a 7.1 receiver, but I can live with that. Blu-ray/DVD movies sound and look amazing.Another thing to note, this amp, when cranked up has never distorted on me, with any speaker (I also ran it with a pair of vintage Henry Kloss Advent Loudspeakers), which is a testament to the hardware. If your receiver is distorting or overdriving, it's crap.My few complaints are: no S-Video input which is a let down for things like my N64 and SNES that I may want to pull out one day. And, while it seems all companies are doing it these days, I can't stand the digital volume knob; you'll have to keep spinning and spinning to lower or increase the volume. Granted you can program the volume to start at a certain -db but I'd preferred it to have been analog, with a finite 0 and max volume on the barrel.Other happy surprises:you can set the blue ring and "porthole" to "off" if you find it distracting to the eye.Airplay is rad! Spend the $50 and you can turn on the SR7005 and control it via your iTunes. You can also control the Marantz on your iPhone via their free app.You can also shut down shown INPUT modes so that when you're toggling through the inputs with the left knob, you don't have to pass by inputs that you aren't in use. Please rate if this review was or wasn't helpful! Thanks

5Classic looks with cutting edge features
By A. Salazar
I was running my Denon 4802 for about 10 years and finally decided to upgrade to an HDMI switching receiver. I thought about another Denon but love the sound of my Marantz receiver I am running in another/smaller room, SR5003, and thought I would give them a close look as well.Long story short, I settle on the SR7005. I did it not only for sound but also technology. I was kind of surprised to see the Marantz being slightly ahead of the Denon's but not that surprised I suppose since they are owned by the same company. The Marantz has the latest HDMI 1.4a spec which is really nice and includes 3D support. The other thing that sold me on it was the fact that it can do passive HDMI pass-through when in Standby so it doesn't have to be on if you are using it as a switch (I have been waiting for a long time for this feature to start showing up in receivers).Sound quality is top notch as you would expect from a Marantz. The one thing I was hoping for was more "umph" from the amp being that it is their flagship. My Denon definitely had a stronger amp and it wasnt even the flagship at the time. But, the Marantz still has plenty so it is a minor grip. The Marantz does have a 7 channel amp which is pretty standard these days and has the option for zones 2 and 3; nice but I will probably never use.I love the on-screen display. Alot has changed in 10 years. The OSD is the first on a Receiver that I have used that is actually easy to navigate and is intuitive. It is internet capable which is cool and the Audyssey setup was straight-forward. You can also set up options to do video up and cross conversion or turn it off altogether so it remains as pure as possible. The remote seems adequate but I have a URC so I wont be using it much. The HDMI Output 1 supports ARC (audio return channel) and works great with my Panasonic plasma which I use for things like Netflixs and Pandora. For looks, it is sleek and slick. Very classic look but still modern. Even my wife loved how it looks :). When the front door is close, you have a round display that tells you input and volume level. The one thing I wish it had was the current surround mode but not the end of the world.Overall, very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend to anyone.Ernie

5The Star of the Show
By Blitzkrieg
Back in 2000 I purchased my first piece of Marantz equipment, the SR8000 surround receiver. I'd had two other stereo/surround receivers prior and neither were as good as the Marantz. Flash forward to 3 weeks ago when I finally decided to upgrade to the SR7005. I was reluctant to make such a move as I was happy with the SR8000 and the technology always seems to be changing and evolving on new equipment. You never know what is going to stick and what is just the latest gimmick. With the SR7005 though, I realized it had what I'd been waiting for and more. Not only does it give me the ability to stream audio via a computer network, which is the future of music listening, but I can hook up my turntable directly to the receiver to listen to vinyl records, rather than having to use an external phono preamp. One less piece of equipment and set of cables to deal with is definitely a plus.So how does it sound? In one word, magnificent! Watching movies via HDMI lossless audio is far superior to the downmixed audio I was used to. I can't believe how good the presentation can be and how much of the experience I was missing from my blu-ray collection. Even DVD's sound better. They weren't lying when they said the bass from this baby plunges depths that usually only costlier separates are capable of. It amazes me consistently at how well it handles the entire audio spectrum.Using the Apple Airplay is mostly fine. I can switch between iTunes libraries and users with relative ease. There is the occasional hiccup where the audio will dropout momentarily or sometimes stop playing all together, requiring a restart of iTunes, but hiccups aside the audio from streaming is better than any CD player I've ever used, not just because of the sound quality, but the versatility and features as well.Listening to vinyl records through the built in phono stage is a treat. It may not be as good as many external preamps out on the market, but it's still pretty damn good. I've enjoyed playing everything from film scores, to rock & roll, to jazz and nothing I played ever sounded less than great. I'd go so far as to say that it bests my highly rated external tube preamp that I used with my old receiver. The Audyssey process was easy, but the figures were all wrong for the space my audio system is set-up in. I had to spend several hours fine tuning the settings to get it just right, but once I did I haven't had to make any further adjustments other than the volume setting on my subwoofer; it differs between music and movies. The difference between using Audyssey and not is quite striking. I much prefer the Audyssey EQ in my listening space as it provides a much more dynamic and intense presentation.Setting up Pandora, internet radio, and HD radio was all easy and sounds as good as expected. I've had no problems with any of those features.Overall I give the Marantz SR7005 4.5 stars. It is the most versatile receiver I've ever used and it certainly sounds far superior to anything I've owned in the past. I've had no major problems while using it and I have no regrets whatsoever in forking over the dough to acquire it. I just hope it lasts as long as my SR8000, which still works just fine after over a decade. Highly recommended!
