The AVR-1713 allows you to enjoy not only the dynamic surround sound of the latest 3D videos in a 5.1-channel home theater but a variety of advanced network capabilities as well. These functions let you listen to thousands of free Internet radio stations or play music files stored on a shared hard disk (NAS) or PC. Since the AVR-1713 also supports AirPlay, you can listen to music content from the iTunes library on your iPad, iPhone, iPod, iPod touch, or PC/Mac via the network. In addition, if you download the new Denon Remote App to your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Android smartphone, you can use the device to operate the main controls of the AVR-1713. With the addition of an external amplifier, the AVR-1713 supports multi-zone operation, allowing two different sources to be enjoyed in separate rooms at the same time.

A pleasure to use

I came from an Onkyo TX-Sr606 which developed HDMI switching problems about 4 years after purchase. This was the second Onkyo that failed so I decided to give Denon a chance.Setup was a breeze; plenty of power for a medium size room. Sound is soft and pleasing. I also like the uncluttered inputs on the back; the assumption is that you will use HDMI mainly for the connections. If you depend on lots of component and toslink, this is not the device. All the audio formats are supported including DTS-MA and True HD. They show up in the panel as MultiChannel unlike the onkyo where it was spelled out.I wish it had a wireless card in it; I've hooked it up to an Airport Wireless and was online quickly.The airplay is awesome.The manual is on a CD in PDF; no paper manual is included.I am very pleased with the receiver.Thanks for reading.

I bought this Denon receiver to replace my Sony Home theater in a box. The Sony lasted for about 8 years and then the center channel stopped working. My current setup has this receiver paired with Mirage Nanosat speakers and the subwoofer from my old Sony HTIB. I will replace the sub eventually. I wanted to write a detailed review to help folks who may be researching this receiver. So here are my thoughts:1. INITIAL SETUPInitial setup was easy. I bought Banana Plugs to connect speaker terminals which made it really easy to connect all the speakers to the receiver. A mistake I made during the initial setup was not connecting the network cable since I did not have a router near my entertainment cabinet (more on this later).Using HDMI cables I connected my DirecTV DVR (to CBL/SAT), DVD player (to DVD) and HTPC (to Media Player).Once I had the speakers and components setup, I powered up the receiver. It walked me through the Audessey setup. It was easy to follow instructions to do this and took about 10 minutes to do so.I tested the sound after this point and was blown away! It sounded amazing even before I had tweaked my setup.2. TWEAKSa) On my DirectTV receiver (HR24-500), I had to enable digital audio output. The only format supported by this DirecTV box is Dolby Digital.b) I had to make sure that my HTPC audio output was better than stereo where possible. Since I use this as my Blu Ray player as well, it is important that I get True HD output.I can't help but repeat myself, the sound quality on this receiver is awesome.3. NETWORK SETUPThe network setup had me banging my head on a wall for sometime. I connected a network cable and tried to set up the network via Setup Assistant. It kept telling me that I had no connection, when I knew I could connect a laptop to my network using the same cable/router port. I tried powering off the receiver and powering it back on. That did not help either. After spending a bit of time on Google, I figured that I had to pull the power plug from the outlet and wait for about 10 minutes before powering it back again. So I did and voila, my network connection was recognized. I was now able to listen to Pandora and some local radio stations (without using the FM Antenna) over the internet.4. OTHER THOUGHTSI have not tested this with Airplay. Nor have I played any iPod/iPhone music on it yet.I am not a big fan of the remote this comes with. My old sony remote was able to control my DVD player and TV. With this one, I have to control each component with its own remote. My next purchase on Amazon will be one of the universal remotes.I did not research into comparable Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer or HK receivers. I compared between the AVR 1613, AVR 1713 and the AVR 1913. I don't tend to change my components often, so I tend to future proof a bit. For me, having the Zone 2 capability was important. This ruled out the AVR 1613. I stayed with the 1713 because of the price. The 1913 is a bit out of my price range and has does not have the Audessey Multi EQ XT. It comes with Audessey Multi EQ.I have been playing with an Android App - Remote Control for Denon by compute4you. It has been working well. I will update on this later.CONCLUSIONThis is a very good receiver with excellent sound quality and not too many bells and whistles. If you care about sound quality the most, you should give this receiver some serious consideration.

I was slightly cautious about buying this receiver with only one review. Took the chance, and so far it's been well worth it. The setup process was painless! The sound quality makes my old HK receiver sound like a bad record. The OSD is user friendly and easy to navigate. Volume auto adjusts itself for each input to avoid shocking volume changes. Airplay sound quality is occasionally sketchy (hiccups), but this may be a result of a home wifi problem rather than the functionality itself. I would highly recommend this receiver!
