Solid, feature rich and excellent video processing!

I pitted this AVR against a Denon AVR-2311CI. The Denon is a older model that is replaced by the 2312. In any case these 2 excel in different ways. First the pioneer, the video processing is a stand out!! With the Marvel video processing chip the HD on this was simply stellar! It made my old TV look as if I bought a new one. I had an Onkyo TX-SR605 before these two were brought in to test out. The Video on that old Onkyo doesnt do my TV justice. Not to mention I had issues with the HDMI on it several time. Onkyo packs lots of feature but that is where it stops. But back to the 1121, it is filled to the gills with features. I like the iControlAVS...fun, easy but doesnt do everything. The Apps are crude and need work. Pandora is hard to setup and the interface is not very pleasing. But it works and I do love internet radio. Power is excellent and plenty of it. The 1121 is also THX Select2 certified. So you get all the additional sound fields and the lucas seal of approval that this AVR meets their standards for distortion and so on. I think this is a novelty at best. For the Denon with now THX sounded substantially better, warmer and with far more detail. The sound processing on this unit is nearly as good as the video. The sound processing is still very good but not excellent. Listening to both side by side after hours of calibration the denon just flat out sounded better. The denon is excellent with sound...period...but video pioneer takes the cake! The remote on this is one I dont like. Hard to read, small buttons...not very well laid out. Connectivity is top notch it does everything...network, airplay, HDMI, Component, Opticals, Coax...you name it! This things works well. The network integration with airplay is very good!! Worked with my iPad2 very well! But is also has USB as well.In the end I gave it 4 of 5 because the sound is just not up to the level and detail that denon has. I am keeping the denon for I cannot deny the sound quality. It is simply amazing! But the pioneers video processing is something incredible. I am yet to see the picture on my TV look better...the denon was very good but the pioneer was better! This is quite the receiver for the money pioneer did an exceptional job. Better than the NR609 I heard as well as a number of yamahas...which would be my 3 pick for Home theater.Update 12/18/2011: I cannot say enough how incredible the video performance is on this unit. It is simply amazing. I compared this to a Denon AVR-2311CI and the denon doesnt even come close! The Denon uses a ABT video chip and the Pioneer a Marvell. The Marvell Qdeo is really incredible but it also might be the way pioneer uses this chip! When I tested these two receivers I had them both plugged in (Swapped in and out during testing using same cables, speakers, Blu-ray. Moto HD Cable box and TV). Once again the sound after extensive configin and using pioneers MCACC auto config mic just couldnt get the 1121 to sound as good as the denon 2311CI. It is solid but the denon has a more detailed sound, warmer, better imaging and depth. The sub also performed much better on the denon...felt and heard. I did a ton of manual adjustments and used all the MCACC Memory settings to see how good I could get it but no matter what I did to the Pioneer I couldnt get it that close to the sound on the denon. On of the biggest things I noticed on the denon was the amount of detail and presences the rears had. It was almost as if the 1121 rears were off...I really had to dial these up to get something solid out of them but the 1121 still couldnt do what the denon can do with the sound.So for video pioneer all day...your HD will look like it has never! The marvell chip makes the video perform far and away beyond my expectations. Now this can be said about the denon for audio. I do love the pioneer and it offers soooo much! Internet radio...not great to setup but works and the ipad app is quite nice. The iControlAVS is good but lacks some stuff. If you are not as critical of sound or have speakers that are not reference this is an amazing value! It is a solid 4-4.5 star AV Receiver.

Excellent sound and Video Processing

This is an excellent overall receiver. The video and audio processing are wonderful and overall sound quality is crisp and clear. To those that are complaining about the difficulty in setting this receiver up....I don't know what to tell you, the GUI is easy to use and the MCACC makes things very simple with the included microphone. Okay, on to the nitty gritty.The Looks of the receiver:This is a large unit, seriously, make sure you have enough room in your entertainment center for this beast. I replaced a Denon AVR 588 with this unit. The Denon fit comfortably within my entertainment centers cabinet. This unit is so large I have very little room left on the bottom shelf of the cabinet. The exterior of the unit is very clean looking with the front door closed. It has a nice and clean look to it, nothing too fancy but very functional.The performance: Video / AudioSomeone in an earlier review mentioned how great the video processing is on this unit. I have to agree, my Denon unit that I previously had only performed HDMI switching / pass through without any conversion etc. This unit's QDeo video processing really makes the picture look beautiful. I thought standard Blu Ray's looked outstanding, they look brilliant with the processing on this unit.The Audio of this unit is nothing short of superb, when paired with a good set of 7.1 speakers the overall sound stage is beautiful, the 110 watts per channel easily plays nearly any source crisp and loud even at very high volumes. I would give this receiver an audio video grade of A. It sounds just as clear and crisp as receivers I have sampled costing two times as much.Setup:Just like any modern receiver with any amount of tuneabilty, this unit takes some time to get setup properly. I found the MCACC makes for a good starting point but I found myself tinkering with the Advanced MCACC settings to get the sound just how I wanted it. I had no problems tuning the unit to how I like it like some other folks. The on screen GUI is easy to use if you have ever used any type of modern interface such as an iPod.The features:The iPod / airplay / iPad integration of this unit works fantastic. I plugged the unit in using an Ethernet cable and without any additional tinkering the receiver showed up on my list of Airplay devices. I didn't have to do anything other than that, it was literally plug and play. The only negative I would say about the airplay is that you can't skip tracks using the Pioneer remote, you either have to do it on the computer or other airplay compatible device.The ipad / ipod integration is also seamless using the supplied cord. Once again it is plug and play. I was also able to play videos off of my iPad on to my big screen TV using the supplied cord. Track selection capability, track skipping and playlist selection are all available right on the remote when the iPod /iPad is connected using the supplied cord.If I am going to be nit picky, I would say the remote is somewhat confusing to use at first but once you conquer that learning curve you will be fine. The iPad app is relatively cool, but not all that useful for actual tuning of the unit itself. I picked this unit up for $429.00 earlier this month and if you can find it near this price you are getting a lot of value for money. This unit is essentially a Premier VSX-52 Pioneer VSX-52 7.1 Channel Elite AV Receiver with a a different model number. I highly recommend this receiver!

This is the first mid-range receiver I have owned and this beast does not disappoint. Hook up of 7.2 surround system was not difficult and the instructions were reasonably comprehensible. I used banana plugs with all applicable connections and 16 guage oxygen-free wire. Used Pioneer's MCACC automatic sound tuning system and this went much smoother than anticipated. Blu-ray movies played via my PS3 sound at least as good as in a theatre. Airplay feature is awesome as is the internet radio capability. PS3 and WII games look and sound fantastic. The video scaler can make regular DVD's look about 80-90% as good as Blu-ray movies. I am still learning the nuances of this device after a week and the more I learn, the more impressed I am with this receiver. Buttons are small on the remote and it takes some getting used to, but once familiar with it, the remote is quite functional. I cannot stress enough the importance of carefully reading the manual prior to, during, and after set-up to maximize your enjoyment of this highly sophisticated and capable audio-visual device. Highly recommended for people who have moderate to advanced technical savvy.
