Don't expect a warranty from Pioneer when you buy online

Just a word of caution: the Elite receivers are excellent and I have owned them for years and will be upgrading to another Elite in the future. However, Pioneer no longer authorizes any online dealers - and even units sold from authorized dealers via online venues do not come with a warranty. This means you want to drive directly to the dealer and purchase the item in the brick-and-mortar if you want the insurance of a warranty.I've never had a Pioneer product fail within the warranty period. My last receiver prior to my current one was the Elite VSX-26TX and it was a model later known to be prone to DSP failure, and mine failed six YEARS after the warranty ran out. But, many owners reported failures within the warranty period. Imagine if you plunk down $1200 to $2500 on an AVR and it turns out to have a defect and fails after a couple of months, and Pioneer refuses to repair it for free because you bought it online. I'd be mad as heck myself, so I bought mine through a local brick-and-mortar. I do wish Pioneer would reconsider their policy since authorized dealers other than Worst Buy/Mangleonolia are few and far between now (since Hi-Fi shops have been going the way of the dinosaur) and I had to drive way out of my way to buy from someone NOT Worst Buy, but it is what it is. If they were to reconsider their warranty, at least I'd have a convenient alternative (Amazon) to the crappy Worst Buy chain. I'd have purchased it through Amazon were the warranty intact.Disclaimer Notice: the parody of that crappy chain's trademark is solely my own responsibility and voices my own personal opinion, and I stand by that opinion (also note that is conveys my own opinion and I am not stating that they are factually crap; it is my opinion that the chain whose trademark I am parodying offers crappy customer service). My opinion of that chain is not endorsed by Amazon and is solely my own opinion. :-)As far as the product itself goes: You can't go wrong with Pioneer Elite receivers if you're looking for outstanding, transparent sound quality. Their remotes and interface aren't the best, nor are they the worst, but their automated sound calibration developed in-house is arguably the best in any AVR line, if somewhat unintuitive. The back panel is logically laid out, but the speaker terminals use nonstandard spacing so you do not want to use paired banana plugs; you will want discrete (individual) banana plugs for your speaker connections.Also be aware that the iPhone/iPod interface cable will NOT work with the iPhone5 due to the iPhone 5's lack of analog video output over the Lightning port. If you have an iPhone 4S or earlier, though, you will be very pleased with the iPhone integration. Even though the interface uses the iPhone's Composite video output (I'm puzzled as to why Pioneer chose to use the AV out rather than the HDMI lines) you will find that it upscales fairly well thanks to Pioneer's choice of video processor.They definitely didn't skimp on the hardware itself, even though the interface and menus are downright user-hostile at times.

My son paired an SC-68 with large Definitive Technology tower speakers as soon as the SC-68 began shipping. We spent most of the first evening wiring things up, not taking the time to take advantage of the auto-calibration MCACC routines that would have automatically set speaker distances and corrected for the shortcomings of his listening room - but there was already an immediate and obvious improvement in sound over his older, but top end, Denon receiver (which I have always liked). I would describe the sound as smooth but very detailed and clear, which has always been the hallmark to me of high end equipment. My son's floor plan is open, and with the volume at movie theater levels the top of the receiver was barely warm. I noticed when listening to movies that small, incidental sounds from the movie's set were apparent and that there was a sense of being on the soundstage. I am told that after running the MCACC routines, that there was a better blend of the front speakers than my son had ever been able to achieve previously. All in all, I was impressed with the Elite's smooth, coherent soundstage. Beyond this, it seems to be packed with every conceivable option that a contemporary home theater receiver could possibly offer, including state-of-the-art video processing and being the only product on the market to provide a 32-bit Asynchronous USB DAC for improved processing of material from a directly connected laptop or computer. A leading edge product.

After just buying a home with a home theatre/media room, I dove into the uncharted waters of audiophilia. I learned alot and the more I learned the more I liked the new Pioneer Elite series. So, I figured I'd move to the front of the class and purchase the SC-68. My speaker setup is 7.1. The Full Auto MCAAC program did an EXCELLENT job of calibrating the speakers and sub. There are many presets the listener can choose from and many, many paramaters to tweak. So many infact, that I may never get around to trying them all out. I'm very happy with the THX-Movie presets for 7.1 audio when watching a movie (even if the movie is 2-channel) and the Sports preset for football games. It is like being there! The movies sound better than a commercial theatre, which in my opinion, is the standard a home theatre system should aim for. This AVR upconverts the video to 1080p (or to whatever your max resolution is) and 36-bit digital audio. I am very happy with this purchase and will consider purchasing other Pioneer products such as their new Elite BD series, which when coupled with this AVR, is designed to provide the best video and audio Pioneer can offer, which is very, very good.
